The Green Vic, the world’s most ethical pub, set to open in Shoreditch
The Green Vic, by The Better World Group, is aiming to open the world’s most ethical pub in Shoreditch later this month. Founded by Randy Rampersad, his aim is to create a pub where everything you buy and use has a positive environmental and social impact.
The pub will start as a three month popup with the goal of gaining investment to open a permanent site early next year. It will take a prominent position on Great Eastern Street and has affordable prices despite only using ethical suppliers, mainly nonprofits and social enterprises, for the beer they serve, to the cleaning materials they use and the food on offer.
The bar will stock drinks that support over 40 individual non-profit charities and the menus will list key information regarding the details of each organisation and the work they are doing. Examples include Brewgooder, Craft Lager, a non profit who donates all their money to clean water projects in Africa via The One Foundation and Ginerosity, Craft Gin, a Social Enterprise whose profits are poured back into projects to help train, educate and mentor the homeless.
The ethical changes aren’t coming just from the drink they sell but also with the people they employ, 1 in 4 staff employed at The Green Vic are from a vulnerable or disadvantaged background, such as the homeless and people with disabilities. The Green Vic have partnered with Unity Kitchen, a social enterprise that trains people with disabilities to get the key skills and qualifications needed to have a career in the F&B world. Once they have passed their training The Green Vic will employ them to give them valuable work experience that they can put on their CV to help get future employment. The same applies for their partnership with Change Please, a social enterprise that trains the homeless to become competition level baristas and then either get them employment or give them their own coffee cart to become fully independent.
Founder, Randy Rampersad says, “I wanted to create a business that made the world a better place, where people can contribute to charity without changing their normal daily routine, has the capability to expand across the UK and combined my passion for partying so a social enterprise pub was the natural fit. One of the drinks brands I work with, ‘Toast Ale’ has a famous quote that sums up my vision perfectly; ‘if you want to change the world, you have to throw a better party than the ones destroying it’, that’s exactly what I am trying to do – make a difference and have fun at the same time!”
Open seven days a week from midday until midnight, The Green Vic will host numerous charity events throughout the week; every Tuesday, a local charity will be given the opportunity to hold free fundraisers in the venue; the charity will be able to put a special cocktail on the menu, to run throughout that week and a pound from each cocktail sold will be donated back to the charity. Whether it be a pub quiz, a raffle or something else, the more creative the fundraiser the better!
At any pub food is important, which is why The Green Vic is partnering with vegan chefs The Green Grill. A successful vegan and cruelty-free food truck, this sensational vegan fast food contains all naturally sourced plant-based products making for a healthy ethical option in keeping with the pub’s character.
Every Saturday they will hold a ‘Better World Brunch’ where five pounds of every ticket purchased will go towards charity and they will try and break a charity world record every brunch too. The cocktail that week will still be available if you’re feeling extra fruity that morning.
